Katarina Witt started skating at the age of five. Soon, her talents began to emerge and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. She met Jutta Muller here. Witt achieved her breakthrough in the second position she placed in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Since then the elegance and grace of her skating caught everyone's attention. She began to dominate this sport. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. She won a much closer competition the following year. Actually, she was not a winner in the free-skating contest, but she did win gold on the basis of results during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the first time a repeat medalist in figure skating for women since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful as an actor. Although she didn't take home a medal, the young woman enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
